INTRODUCTORY TEXT
Ecological citizenship (EC) is a type of citizenship encouraging individuals, communities and organizations to be citizens of the world and reflect on environmental rights and responsibilities. EC, a term coined by Dobson (2003), emerges from our new impact on the environment and encourages citizens to profoundly reconsider their daily habits and assumes responsibilities in relation to their ecological footprint. EC is global extending both across generations and territorial borders. EC is a theoretical model for behavioral change relying on a comprehensive rethinking of the values ​​governing the balance between rights and responsibilities and in line with the environmentally protective agenda of EC. Individual ecological responsibility targets lifestyles rather than single activities and promotes behavioral change due to inner moral considerations. An ecological citizen assumes the responsibilities of active citizenship, engaging in both changing private behavior and participating in collective actions to push for responsible change.
