Discover the incredible history of the USS Barney (DD-149/AG-113), a Wickes-class destroyer with a rich service record during World War II and beyond. Launched on September 5, 1918, and commissioned on March 14, 1919, the ship was named in honor of Commodore Joshua Barney and sponsored by Miss Nannie Dornin Barney.

Barney's story includes multiple commissioning and decommissioning periods. She served with Division 19, Atlantic Fleet, engaging in fleet exercises along the East Coast before being decommissioned in Philadelphia on June 30, 1922. Recommissioned on May 1, 1930, she operated on the East Coast and in the Caribbean, participating in fleet exercises and cruises to Alaska, Honolulu, and Puget Sound.

After another decommissioning in November 1936, Barney was recommissioned on October 4, 1939, and served on patrol duty with the 66th Division, Atlantic Squadron, and the Inshore Patrol, 18th Naval District Defense Force. From December 1941 to November 1943, she escorted convoys in the Caribbean, with a notable collision incident involving the destroyer Greer in September 1942.

Between January and May 1944, Barney completed two convoy escort crossings to North Africa and continued escorting convoys in the Caribbean until February 1945. In March 1945, she engaged in training exercises with submarines and was reclassified as AG-113 on June 30, 1945. Barney was decommissioned on November 30, 1945, and sold for scrap on October 13, 1946. She earned one battle star for her escort of Convoy UOS 37 from April 11 to April 12, 1944.
