Artist Nyugen E. Smith talks about the relationship of the "Spirit Carriers" to his practice and the Bundlehouses.

The work of artist Nyugen E. Smith examines the universal human experiences of memory, trauma, and spirituality through the multifarious impacts of colonialism on the African diaspora. A first-generation Caribbean-American born in Jersey City, New Jersey, to Haitian and Trinidadian parents, and a Lecturer on Interdisciplinary Art at SMU in Dallas, Smith uses performance, found object sculpture, mixed media drawing, painting, video, photography, and writing to connect past upheavals with present political struggles. For Nasher Public, Smith presents fourteen Spirit Carriers, a series of found object constructions that the artist began in 2016. Suspended from the ceiling, the sculptures seem to float in the space, like eccentric, improvised air balloons. Their characteristic shape derives from the crowns of Yoruba chiefs, whose beaded headdresses featured veils to shield the monarch’s visage from the public, thus also protecting viewers from the chief’s power. Smith made the Spirit Carriers as vessels to carry and protect the spirits of unarmed people of color killed by the police, until, as the artist says, “the spirits can go where they need to go.” "Spirit Carriers" is on view at the Nasher, December 10, 2020 - January 3, 2021

El trabajo del artista Nyugen E. Smith, examina las experiencias humanas universales de memoria, trauma y espiritualidad a través de los múltiples impactos del colonialismo en la diáspora Africana. Como miembro de una primera generación Caribeña-Americana nacida en Jersey City, Nueva Jersey, de padres Haitianos y Trinitarios, y Profesor de Arte Interdisciplinario en SMU en Dallas, Smith utiliza las artes escénicas, escultura de objetos encontrados, dibujo de medios mixtos, pintura, video, fotografía y escritura para conectar los trastornos del pasado con las luchas políticas actuales. Para Nasher Public, Smith presenta catorce Portadores del Espíritu, una serie de construcciones de objetos encontrados que el artista comenzó en 2016. Suspendidas del techo, las esculturas parecen flotar en el espacio, como excéntricos globos de aire improvisados. Su forma característica deriva de las coronas de los jefes Yoruba, cuyos elaborados tocados que formaban velos para proteger la visión del monarca del público, protegiendo así también a los espectadores del poder del jefe. Smith hizo a los Portadores del Espíritu como naves para llevar y proteger los espíritus de personas de color desarmadas ultimadas por la policía, hasta que, como dice el artista, "los espíritus puedan ir a donde necesitan ir". "Portadores del Espíritu" está a la vista en Nasher, desde el 10 de diciembre de 2020 hasta el 3 de enero de 2021.

Nasher Public es una iniciativa de arte público que tiene como objetivo generar acceso al arte público por los artistas del Norte de Texas en el Centro de Escultura Nasher y en toda la comunidad del área Metropolitana de Dallas.
