JigStones rustic 00 scale stone walling at 'Dovendale' Ep. 10

Merry Christmas!
And to kick off this slightly longer episode than usual, it rather looks like Dovendale might be treated to a sprinkling of virtual snow as we check out the latest features.
After a swift tour of what's cooking here's a demonstration of how the JigStones '00'/'H0' model stonework blocks are produced and demoulded, using rapid set cement. The '00' version, which consists of ten different modules, can be used for any requirement of rustic looking modelwork from embankment walling to simple or complicated buildings. Glued together with a clear general adhesive, like UHU, structures have a substantially solid form in preference to thin walled pretence of plastic or card representation...though choices are always personal of course. Grouting the final build is essential to reduce appearance of the modular construction. This is done with a mix of silver sand (or kids' play sand) and PVA, rubbed in with finger or brush, and any excess removed with a damp cloth and then probably painted with acrylics. I dab and smear this on with a finger. I'm not into picking out each stone...that's unnecessary as stonework of an age is never that pretty. Well it isn't where I live; usually filthy with road dust and years of airborne grime.

The JigStones concept was so basic it took just ten minutes to design during a lunch break while at work in Surrey over 30 years ago (and two minutes to give it a name!), but some stunning results have ever since been created in the UK, Europe and North America. Also quite crude ones, so don't go by all examples you might see. It requires great care to keep everything square and upright.
