"One of the main stakeholders in the continuity of the model of (government) of Hugo Chavez in Venezuela is the Cuban government. Undoubtedly, because as I said in my previous statement, there is a large subsidy, great economic support (from Venezuela's government), that is not by any means anything small. It is a vital support for the government of Raul Castro at the moment, for example has allowed (Castro) to implement these very slow reforms at a very superficial level. In the absence of the subsidy, he (Castro) would be forced to use foreign capital and give more space to the private sector in the island. And that's why I think they are most likely monitoring and closely watching what is happening in Venezuela. Venezuelans have a reason to worry in this situation."

STORYLINE:
A prominent Cuban blogger said that the government of Raul Castro would be interested in seeing political continuity in Venezuela following the death of its leader Hugo Chavez.
The blogger, Yoani Sanchez, told journalists in Mexico that Chavez had provided "a large subsidy and great economic support" to the Caribbean island.
Sanchez made the remarks during a visit to the state of Puebla, in central Mexico, where she is attending the semi-annual meeting of the Inter American Press Association.
Sanchez said Venezuela's economic support had allowed Castro to implement "slow" and "superficial" reforms.
The dissident said the absence of the subsidy might prompt change in Cuba.
Under Chavez, Venezuela has been a key supporter of Cuba, sending billions of US dollars of oil to the island on preferential terms and becoming by far its largest commercial partner.
The two countries did 8 billion US dollars in trade in 2011, the latest year for which figures are available.
The Cuban government declared two days of national mourning and ordered flags to fly at half-staff after the death of Chavez.
Cuban President Raul Castro travelled to Venezuela to pay his respect to Chavez lying in state at the military academy in Caracas and also attended his funeral on Friday.
