"There are differences of opinion on the question of continuing the war or a quick cease-fire and peace negotiations. But one thing is obvious today: that the pro-peace camp is growing. And in the American election, the pro-peace camp grew enormously. We are not talking about victory and defeat. We're talking about a ceasefire, we're talking about human lives, we're talking about stopping the destruction. So those who have that perspective on the war are today in the majority in the Western world while they weren't before the American election. This is a new situation to which Europe must respond.”

STORYLINE:
Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Thursday that he foresees possible quick and decisive policy changes after Donald Trump won the U.S. presidential election.

He made his remarks at the European Political Community summit in Hungary's capital, Budapest, where around 50 European leaders met on Thursday.

"The world will change, it will change faster than we think. There are big, huge questions on the table," said Orbán.

European leaders reassessed their trans-Atlantic relations at the summit in the hope that Trump's second U.S. presidency will avoid the strife of his first administration.

Talking about the idea of a ceasefire in Ukraine, Orbán said that after the U.S. elections, "the pro-peace camp grew enormously".

He added that Europe may now need to adapt its position on the issue.

During the campaign, Trump said he could end Russia's military in Ukraine, now well into its third year, in a single day.

Ukraine and many of its European backers fear that this means a peace on terms favorable to Russian President Vladimir Putin and involving the surrender of territory.

European allies in NATO hope to convince Trump that if he helps to negotiate any peace, it should be done from a position of strength, for both Ukraine and the U.S.
