Welcome to another edition of the jazz albums review series and today i am going to be taking a look at a brand new 2025 release, this time from legendary bassist, composer and bandleader, John Patitucci.

'Spirit Fall' marks the second time in his career that John Patitucci has recorded and released an album that featured saxophone, bass & drums. The last time that Patitucci recorded in that environment was back in 2009 for his 'Remembrance' album which featured saxophonist Joe Lovano. For 'Spirit Fall', Patitucci returns to the sax trio format once again but this with a different sax player, world renowned saxophonist Chris Potter and returning to the fold is longtime drummer & collaborator Brian Blade who also played on Patitucci's 2009 'Remembrance' album.

Between Patitucci, Potter and Blade, they have seen it all, done it all and played with everyone. John Patitucci is one of the greatest bass players of all time, he's played with everyone from Steve Khan to Wolfgang Muthspiel to Michael Brecker to Adam Rogers to Lee Ritenour to Dave Grusin to Herbie Hancock to name a few and is best known for his long association as a memmber of the legendary Chick Corea Elektric Band and Chick Corea Akoustic Band. He was also a member of the legendary Wayne Shorter quartet for 2 plus decades.

John Patitucci and Chris Potter have been playing together since the mid 90s, Potter has played on almost every recent Patitucci album except four albums. John Patitucci and Brian Blade have played together in every situation & setting since the 00s. They were the rhythm section as members of the legendary Wayne Shorter quartet and Blade has been a regular fixture for most of Patitucci's recent projects. Both Patitucci and Blade played on Potter's excellent 2024 'Eagle's Point' album. These three musicians know each other very well and have played together many times over the years.

'Spirit Fall' marks the first time ever that Patitucci, Potter and Blade have recorded a studio album together as a trio. As you would expect from three world class musicians, you get excellent playing and top notch musicianship. Anytime you get Patitucci, Potter and Blade together on an album, you know it's going to be great.

All three musicians are on top form with Patitucci playing both electric and acoustic bass. Potter who has a massive presence and plays a huge role in the music is featured on tenor & soprano sax but also adds a dark brooding sound with bass clarinet. Brian Blade brings a laidback approach to the music with percussive drumming.

'Spirit Fall' is an excellent from one of the greatest bass players of all time and in my opinion, one of the best albums of 2025.
