In 2021, Canada had 2,076 long-term care homes with 198,000 spaces - that’s on average 29 beds per 1,000 adults ages 65+. With service delivery, admission criteria and regulations differing across provinces and territories and LTC facilities facing increasing care complexity, capacity limitations and staffing shortages - there’s a lot of pressure on an already overburdened system. Add to this the ageing population often referred to as the grey tsunami and you have a system that, according to researchers, will need to double capacity over the next decade just to maintain its current level of care. But there is hope.

Some working with senior have also called this time a golden opportunity. With so much research in Canada, we now have the ability to learn from the past and find innovative ways to make things better. CIHI believes that data holds the key - that’s why on February 26th, we’re releasing our latest LTC indicators on everything from staffing overtime and the use of antipsychotic drugs, to resident falls and the social engagement of clients. This information will be a jumping off point for a discussion on the challenges and solutions that healthcare workers face providing long-term care to seniors. Finally, this webinar is part of CIHI’s new series on Aging With Dignity that will include podcasts, web stories and social media posts.
