The Link: Why These Two Shots Work Together
We focused on the idea that a good drop shot is set up by a deep, heavy ball first. By pushing your opponent back, especially deep to the backhand you are able to create space at the front of the court for the drop shot to be effective.
Drop Shot Fundamentals
Grip and Feel
The Continental (“Chopper”) Grip
We used the Continental grip for drop shots, allowing better feel, control, and the ability to take pace off the ball.
Volley-Like Technique
The drop shot technique is very similar to a volley:
Minimal backswing
Soft hands
Compact motion
The goal is control, not power.
Soft Contact and Shape
Take the pace off the ball
The ball should peak on your side of the net
Let the ball descend and gently fall over the net
A small amount of backspin can be added for extra control.
A good drop shot should just clear the net and die quickly.
Topspin Forehand Fundamentals
Heavy, High Forehand
We worked on hitting deep, heavy topspin forehands to control rallies rather than going for outright winners.
Key Technical Points:
Load on the outside leg
Use a long, relaxed swing
Finish high with the arm wrapping up over your shoulder.
This shot is not About Power
The focus was on:
Height over the net
Depth
Consistency
This is a neutral rally ball.
Slow your swing down and lengthen the shape of your swing to make that ball go deeper. Should be a relaxed long motion.
