DescriptionThis is a song I wrote for the beginning of a ritual dedicated to Dhéǵhōm Mā́tṛ, “Earth Mother,” the Proto-Indo-European goddess of the earth. The pictures represent going towards the place where the opening rites will take place. The horn is sounded, people gather, they are purified, a fire is lit, butter is offered to it, and then there is a procession to the main ritual site.
The Proto-Indo-Europeans are the ancestors of the Indo-European cultures, those of such peoples as the Celts, the Teutons, the Romans, the Greeks, the Balts, the Slaves, and the Indo-Iranians, among others. What we know about them comes from reconstructing their language and culture from their descendant cultures. We don’t know what Proto-Indo-European music would have sounded like. I just happened to like this style.
The Proto-Indo-European words I sing are:
Gwṃte, gwṃte, gwṃte,
Gwigwmsḱote, gwigwmsḱotōd!
Gwṃte Ǵénēsā!
Gwṃte Dhéǵōm!
Gwigwmsḱote, gwigwmsḱotōd!
Gwṃte, gwṃte, ḱikwe xáisdote!
In English, this is roughly:
Come, come, come,
Ever come, ever and always come!
Come to the Kindreds!
Come to the Earth!
Ever come, ever and always come,
Come, come, worship here!
The song was written for a ritual dedicated to the Earth Mother. If you’d like to use it for a ritual dedicated to one of the other Proto-Indo-European deities, you can just replace “Dhéǵōm” with their name in the accusative case (accusative of direction for you linguists out there). This other video of mine lists and describes the reconstructed Proto-Indo-European deities: • Proto-Indo-European Deities . The accusative forms of their names are: Dyḗm Ptḗrm, Xáryomēn, Perkʷū́nom, Diwós Sunū́ns, Xákʷōm Népōtṃ, Yemóm, Páxuson, Mēnōm, ʔéḱwonām, Gʷouwindām, Xáusōs, Sawélyosyo Dhugət̄́rm, Donum, Wéstyām.
Another Proto-Indo-European song of mine, to Xáryomēn, is at • Hymn to the Proto-Indo-European God Xáryomēn . The song we sing when we light our fire, and the short ritual of offering to it can be found here: • Hearth goddess song and offering .
