Alice: Madness Returns act - C4/CCCC finals - Team Netherlands

Here it is!!! The official video from the C4 (Clara Cow Cosplay Cup) cosplay finals of our Alice: Madness Returns performance! It gave Yaraiya and I the amazing honor of winning the 2nd place in the finals. Representing the Netherlands! Woooh!!! I can’t even begin to tell you how nervous and excited I am to share this video!

I can say so much more about this whole project, also about the self-made costumes. I can tell you that Yaraiya and I are planning an Alice photoshoot very soon. Hopefully you can then also see all the details I put in my London/real Alice dress. :D

The preparations for this performance were so unlike any other performance I’ve ever done. First off, I got the idea for this performance very suddenly. I quickly called Yaraiya that evening and basically told her “I have this crazy idea that just might work!” so we signed up for the contest with it and did the first version at the Dutch preliminaries. We won that contest! Then to the International finals. * ____ * We were actually preparing something else but at some point I called Yaraiya again to tell her that I felt like we were leaving out the potential our preliminaries performance could have.

We wrote a new opening. Sophie re-sung some of the lyrics for our cover song. Thank you again Sophie!! And of course we also wrote a new ending and added the props like the mirror that we felt would convey the message we were telling even clearer. Now this version opens with the real Alice (short hair) sitting in the real world talking to her psychiatrist while Wonderland Alice (blue dress) is just her reflection. But in the end scene, through all that struggle, Wonderland Alice has now taken her place completely. It was sanity vs insanity.

Things I’m sad you can’t see in this video:

- The syncing of our movements during the entire opening to hammer home the mirror symbolism has been lost a bit since the camera doesn’t capture us both at the same time. Now the video mostly focuses on the last part where Wonderland Alice stops being just a reflection by staring at the real Alice at “I am”.

- The blood on my neck and in my mouth at the end is not that visible either. Although I heard from many people in the audience that they did see it and that I am never allowed to play dead again because it was scary (sorry!!!! xD )!!


Things I am very happy that you can see very well in this video:

- Yaraiya knocking her role as Wonderland Alice out of the park!!! She already did an amazing job in the preliminaries version but in this finals version she is downright scary and I am so proud of her!

- The lights in the Hysteria masks. :D

- The knife Wonderland Alice (Yaraiya) used to kill me actually disappears at the end, and you can see it! It was a small little gimmick that we knew that if we wouldn’t do it people would get distracted by the knife just being thrown away but that it is such a small effect that not many will notice when we do carry it out. But in this video you can notice it! Right when Wonderland Alice steps through the mirror at the end. Before she goes through the mirror she is holding the knife, but when she steps through it’s no longer in her hand. It’s not on the ground either when the camera zooms out. Ahhh I love this.
