Hello Fam! I am so excited to bring to you - "They Say!”

I have been anxious and excited to share this song with you. It is one of those songs that came out like song vomit - it was a story I needed to get out. This song is about the dysfunction of American power structures. It’s about how the systems built to support the people, don’t support all people. Especially during a pandemic, it’s been exposed how those lower on the socio-economic ladder are left without the basic resources everyone deserves.

This video was filmed the day after the Stay at Home order was put into effect in Los Angeles County on March 16th. Many of my friends who are gig workers, service industry workers, independent contractors, and artists were left without work, without a clear plan for how to pay rent in April, and without certainty of being able to qualify for unemployment. As American life crumbled around us due to the looming pandemic, suddenly it was clear that in cases of emergency, not all Americans are truly safe and accounted for. At sunrise we walked through the empty streets of downtown LA. We walked past the restaurants, businesses and venues that would hopefully make it through the Spring. We walked through the thick fog of silence of a city that was bustling barely two weeks prior. In between takes we referred each other to artists grants, and exchanged ideas on how to survive this mess. We were not only witnessing it, we were living inside of it. As Autumn nears, and many folks will be facing eviction from their LA apartments, I am reminded of this paradoxical reality we live in, and dream of a future where those who need it most will be protected.

I hope you enjoy “They Say” and share it with your friends and community. Thank you to Matthew Freiheit for capturing this moment with me.
