Central America today confronts a challenging security situation. As Mexicoapos;s and Colombiaapos;s governments continue their fight against transnational crime organizations, many of them have moved to Central America, particularly the "Northern Triangle" countries of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. This has resulted in growing crime rates with some of the highest murder rates in the world. The United States, along with other nations and multilateral organizations, have begun to pay increasing attention, highlighted by Secretary Clintonapos;s trip to the region in June 2011 to participate in the Central American Security Conference. As Central American states try to meet the challenges in a coordinated way, how can other countries help? Addressing these issues, CSIS and the Council of the Americas/Americas Society welcome the Secretary General of the Sistema de la Integraci?n CentroAmericana (SICA - Central American Integration System), Juan Alem?n Gurdi?n. A panel discussion will follow Secretary General Alem?n, with Todd Robinson, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement, Vicente Echand?a, Minister Counselor at the Embassy of Colombia, and an additional speaker to be confirmed.
