Gangasati was a medieval women saint poet of Saurashtra, Gujarat, Western India. She is also known as Mirabai of Gujarat. Gangasati (ca. 18th-19th century) was born in a royal family of Rajpara village of Palitana, a Saurashrian district of Gujarat. Having a religious bent of mind right from her childhood, when she was married to Kahalsang Gohil of Samadhiyala village in Bhavnagar (a Saurashrian district) she prevailed upon him to lead a religious life. According to the royal tradition of the time, when Gangasati went to her in-law’s house, Panbai came with her as a maid and friend.

She has created 52 Bhajans (Poems) which are addressed to her friend and disciple Panbai. These Bhajans are inspiration and guidance for all seekers/ saadhaks who are on the path of self actualization/ realization.

Saurashtra, a peninsular region of western India on the Arabian seacoast of Gujarat, inevitably fascinates seekers, scholars and researchers for its legendary traditions of shuras (braves) and sant (saint-poets). The sant-vani of Saurashtra indisputably represents an extremely significant strand in the Bhakti tradition of Gujarat.

Gangasati’s bhajans remain a powerful presence, almost the centerpiece of cultural memory in all Gujarati households to such an extent that, at least in Saurashtra and Kachchh,listening to her bhajans every morning is a kind of ritual and if you have been born in that area, you just cant escape from the beauty and serenity of her bhajans.

In 1947, Jhaverchand Meghani edited forty-one bhajans of Ganga sati from the manuscript of 51 bhajans he received from Nanubhai Dudhrejiya and published them in his book titled Sorathi Santvani (1947).

Here in bhajans, Gangasati is throwing light on all three possible paths of saadhana which are Gyan, Bhakti and Yog and also about importance of Guru (Master) in this journey.

The program was to celebrate 125 Years of her Nirvana Day. It is about her Bhajans and their meaning. The program was held at Sadguru Kabir Gyan Ashram at Vadodara, Gujarat on 30 March 2019.
