Описание к видео Lucy Letby: A Miscarriage of Justice? The Medical Evidence Raising Doubt

This episode of The Silent Casebook examines why the case of Lucy Letby continues to raise serious questions after conviction.

Lucy Letby was found guilty of murdering and attempting to murder babies while working as a neonatal nurse. Those convictions remain legally binding. This episode does not seek to retry the case or undermine the jury. Instead, it carefully examines the arguments made by medical professionals, legal commentators, and campaigners who believe the convictions may represent a miscarriage of justice.
In this episode, we explore:

Why international neonatal experts dispute key medical conclusions presented at trial

Alternative explanations proposed for the baby collapses and deaths

Concerns around air embolism, insulin interpretation, and nasogastric tube evidence

Arguments about systemic failures within neonatal care

Why appeals have failed — and why critics argue that isn’t the end

The role of public scrutiny, professional dissent, and the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC)

This is a deeply sensitive subject. Our thoughts remain with the families who lost babies, and nothing in this episode is intended to diminish their grief. This is an examination of evidence, uncertainty, and responsibility — not an assertion of innocence.

🔬 Medical Terms Explained (For Viewers)

Air Embolism - A condition where air enters the bloodstream and obstructs blood flow. In neonates, its diagnosis is complex and disputed, particularly when relying on skin discolouration alone.

Insulin & C-Peptide Ratio - Used to assess whether insulin in the body is naturally produced or externally administered. Critics argue this test is unreliable in premature infants due to immature metabolism and assay interference.

Sepsis - A life-threatening response to infection. In premature babies, it often develops gradually and can cause sudden collapse.

Pneumothorax - Air trapped in the chest cavity that can collapse a lung. If not treated promptly, it can be fatal.

Necrotising Enterocolitis (NEC) - A serious intestinal condition affecting premature infants, often presenting with abdominal distension, vomiting, and collapse.

Thrombosis - The formation of blood clots, particularly common in premature infants with central or long intravenous lines.

Nasogastric (NG) Tube - A tube passed through the nose into the stomach for feeding or drainage. Air can enter the stomach during resuscitation or respiratory support, complicating interpretation.
