In this excerpt from Words of Grace, Benjamin Winslett explains the meaning of the kingdom of heaven in the context of Scripture. He connects John the Baptist's message, Jesus' ministry, and Daniel's prophecy to reveal that this kingdom is none other than the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ.

“Now, regarding the kingdom here, what is the kingdom here in this passage? I recognize that most minds run to the end of time and what I refer to as the final phase of God's kingdom. But remember, John the Baptist began his ministry here by saying, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’

When Jesus began his ministry in Matthew chapter 4, how does He begin His ministry? By preaching, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Jesus sends the apostles out to begin their personal ministries, and what He taught them to preach was, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’

The words ‘at hand’ mean the kingdom was in the world at that time. It had come. It was at hand. It was there.

Prophetically, Daniel says that there's coming a day in the days of the Roman Caesars—after the Babylonian Empire, the Medo-Persian Empire, the Greek Empire, and during the Roman Empire—God was going to establish a kingdom Himself, and that kingdom would have no end.

The Hebrew writer equates it with the new covenant, the general assembly, and the church of the firstborn—a kingdom which cannot be moved. This kingdom is none other than the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ. When everything is as it ought to be in the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, we enjoy a kingdom experience here in His church.”
