The martyrdom of Saint Denis is the story of how Saint Denis, the first bishop of Paris and one of the earliest Christian missionaries in Gaul, was executed for his faith in the 3rd century. He was sent from Italy to preach Christianity in the pagan city of Lutetia, now Paris, where his teachings began converting many people. This angered the Roman authorities, who still worshipped the old gods and viewed Christianity as a threat.

Denis was arrested along with two companions, the priest Rusticus and the deacon Eleutherius. They were tortured and ordered to renounce their faith, but all three refused. As punishment, they were taken to a hill north of the city—what would later be called Montmartre, or “Mount of the Martyr”—and beheaded.

According to legend, after his decapitation, Saint Denis miraculously stood up, picked up his own head, and began walking several miles while preaching a sermon of repentance. He finally collapsed at the site where he chose to die, which later became the town of Saint-Denis. A church was built there in his honor, eventually becoming the Basilica of Saint-Denis, the burial place of French kings.
