Did you know that on average there are 40 to 50 throw ins per game in the English Premier League? And that teams lose the ball more than 50 percent when their players receive throw ins under pressure?

Here are 5 steps for a clever way of receiving a throw in. They’re simple, underrated and highly effective when done right.

0:56 (Step 1 - Verbal Communication) - The ball has just gone out for a throw in and your teammate goes to grab it. As they are walking back to the line, call their name to get their attention.

1:05 (Step 2 - Eye Contact) - After the verbal communication, follow this up with eye contact and hold their gaze to maintain their attention.

1:13 (Step 3 - Signal) - The key step. As you’re holding the gaze of the thrower, make a signal that they can see, but hide it from the defender. Our favorite is a finger point from the hip. Typically defenders will be goal side on throw ins, so your point will be safe side towards your own goal.

1:43 (Step 4 - Double Movement) - Now the thrower knows where you want to receive it, you need to create space. The double movement is a great way of doing this. The first movement in a double movement is for the defender, the second movement is for you to receive.

Trick the defender by walking away slowly, pretending you’re not interested in receiving the ball. They’ll typically follow you, but you’ll lose their attention through your disinterest in the ball. As soon as you’ve created some distance in your walk, burst back into the space towards where your finger was first pointing. The thrower should give you the ball.

2:11 (Step 5 - Receiving) - How much separation you’ve created between yourself and the defender will dictate what you do with the ball. If the defender is still close by, you could pass the ball back quickly to the thrower, but if you’ve created a good amount of space, you can take a touch and turn out.
