On June 6, 1944, during the D-Day invasion of Normandy, American paratroopers were dropped behind enemy lines to secure key positions before the beach landings. In the chaos of the night drop, one paratrooper’s parachute became entangled on the tower of a church in the village of Sainte-Mère-Église.

Suspended high above the streets, he was unable to move as intense fighting erupted below. German troops patrolled the area, unaware that a soldier was hanging silently above them. For more than two hours, he remained motionless, pretending to be dead to avoid detection.

The battle raged beneath him with gunfire, explosions, and confusion. Against all odds, he survived the night and was later rescued. The incident became one of the most unusual and well-documented moments of the D-Day airborne landings.
