Gideon (Judges 6–8)
Intro
Welcome to the homestead
Journey: Abraham → David & his mighty men
Learning lessons from God’s people
Last time: Deborah, Barak, and Jael
Today: Gideon — the reluctant warrior
1. Israel’s Oppression (Judges 6:1–6)
Israel sins; Midian oppresses them
People hide in caves and cry out to God
Servant Leader: Even leaders can feel powerless
Application: God listens when His people humble themselves and call for help
2. Gideon’s Call (Judges 6:11–16)
Gideon hiding in a winepress, threshing wheat in secret
Angel calls him a “mighty man of valor”
Gideon questions God: “If the Lord is with us, why has this happened?”
Husband: God sees more in us than we see in ourselves
Application: Lead your home in faith, even when you feel small or unworthy
3. Gideon’s First Obedience (Judges 6:25–27)
God tells Gideon to tear down his father’s idol
He obeys at night out of fear
Father: Lead by example—remove idols from your home
Application: Break old patterns; guide your family toward obedience and faith
4. Gideon Questions God Again (Judges 6:36–40)
Gideon asks God for proof using the fleece
First: fleece wet, ground dry
Second: fleece dry, ground wet
Servant Leader: God is patient with our doubts
Application: Ask God for clarity, but don’t let fear or waiting stop obedience
5. God Reduces the Army (Judges 7:1–8)
Gideon gathers 32,000; God cuts it down to 300
Shows victory is God’s, not man’s
Father: Teach that strength comes from trust, not numbers or power
Application: Depend on God’s strength, not your own resource
6. The Victory (Judges 7:15–25)
Gideon worships, then attacks with 300 men, torches, and trumpets
Enemy panics and destroys itself
Servant Leader: Lead with faith and creativity
Application: Encourage your group or community to follow God’s plan, even when it seems risky
7. Gideon’s Pride and Fall (Judges 8:22–27)
Israel asks Gideon to be king—he says no
But names his son Abimelech (“my father is king”)
Starts living like a king—wealth, wives, and an ephod that becomes an idol
Husband & Father: Pride and comfort can corrupt good beginnings
Application: Stay humble; keep your heart and home centered on God
8. Peace and Legacy (Judges 8:28–35)
40 years of peace under Gideon
After his death, Israel falls back into sin
All Three Pillars: Faithfulness must continue beyond your lifetime
Application: Build a legacy of faith your children and community can carry on
Closing
Gideon began fearful and hiding, but God grew his faith
He questioned God, tested God, and still obeyed—but later stumbled in pride
Takeaway: God can use ordinary men who doubt, fear, and question—as long as they keep trusting Him
