The permanently hot be it wet or dry, tropical paradise of Darwin. The capital city of Australia's Northern Territory or as the locals say "THE NT", Not Today, Not Tomorrow, Not Tuesday and Not Thursday reflecting the laid back attitude. More than 150,000 people call Darwin home over half the NT's population of 244,000 reside in the city. A city where Asian, Indian and African cultures meld with Australia creating a unique, accommodating and accepting mindset. Darwin City Council proclaim, "Our city is both modern and multicultural, boasting a population made up of people from more than 60 nationalities and 70 different ethnic backgrounds."
Personally Darwin is my favorite place to live and the place I now call my home.
On September the 9th, 1839, the HMS Beagle arrived in Darwin harbour. The Scottish explorer and First Officer John Clements Wickham named the region "Port Darwin" in honour of their former shipmate Charles Darwin. Darwin is the smallest, wettest and most northerly of Australia's capital cities and the ancestral home of the Aboriginal Larrakia people, the "Saltwater People". Darwin has a monsoonal tropical climate with a wet season and a dry season. The wet season creating the one and only place in the world where you can witness "Hector the Convector". The city has been rebuilt four times, three from cyclones and from the over 60 Japanese air raids during World War ll. Torrential rains and lightning are prevalent in the wet season. Tropical flora and fauna dominate the area. Parrots and cockatoos make up the over 400 species of birds, 50 species of frogs, 10 species of kangaroos and wallabies part of the 150 species of mammals, 60 species of fish and the infamous box jelly fish. Crocodiles!! The local view being there are more "crocs" in the NT, over 240,000, than people. The "crocs" adore the ideal, untouched habitats in and around Darwin. Darwin is the gateway to Asia and the UNESCO listed Kakadu National Park. Covering over 20,000 sq. kilometres Kakadu is one of the most ecologically and culturally significant areas of Australia. Darwin, a city shaped by remoteness and the extremes of climate, hot/dry or hot/wet, over 1.8ml (68 inches) of rain and an average 75% humidity for 6 months, hot and dry for 6 months with zero rain and low humidity. A tropical delight tucked away and somewhat detached from the rest of the Australia. "You'll never never know, if you never never go."
