Описание к видео Mapping the Madras

🔸 The Alliance Française of Trinidad and Tobago and the Barbados Museum & Historical Society are pleased to support the Conference « Mapping the Madras ».

🔸 This "Mapping the Madras" online event is a discussion about both traditional and contemporary considerations of the "Madras" fabric, which factors heavily in the history of trade, race and identity in the Caribbean. While the fabric has been associated with traditions of female African-Caribbean dress in many parts of the region, this Webinar will hear from two men who work within the ambit of history and design.

🔹Sonja Dumas
Sonja Dumas is an award-winning, multi-hyphenate arts practitioner, educator and theorist, specializing in dance and film from Trinidad and Tobago. She locates both her research and her aesthetic practice in historical and contemporary phenomena of the Caribbean and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Cultural Studies at the University of the West Indies. Her project "Mapping the Madras" was born during the early months of COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 when she realized how drawn she was to a mask made of Madras

🔹Dr. Jonathan Square of the United States, and James Hackett of Trinidad and Tobago. Dr. Square is based in New York and is an Assistant Professor at Parsons School of Design, where he teaches a course called Fashion and Justice. He is also a fellow in the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and was previously a lecturer in the Committee on Degree in History and Literature at Harvard University.

🔹 James Hackett is an illustrator/designer from Trinidad and Tobago whose career spans advertising, Carnival, print, design, illustration, Rapso, writing, fine art and animation. His Trinidad-based design enterprise is called Lush Kingdom. The two men will discuss various aspects of the encounter of history, fashion and tradition as it relates to Madras, and what that might mean for how the fabric is used and reinterpreted today. Participants will also get a chance to ask questions and contribute to the discussion after the two presentations
