Alone in the Dark (1992) is the grandfather of survival horror games. For the first time, it combined handdrawn backgrounds with 3D polygon characters that made cinematic perspectives possible. Its story mixes influences of lovecraftian horror (you can find many references in the ingame books), haunted house stories and grotesque humor. Every room can be deadly if you are not careful.
