Terry Riley: In C

Описание к видео Terry Riley: In C

As part of performance spotlight week, the RIAM composition students put on a performance of Terry Riley's "In C". Each performer controlled a PATCHBLOCK, a programmable synthesizer module onto which the phrases had been programmed and the sound modules designed from scratch. This is a short version of the 1 hour long performance.

The score of "In C" features 53 phrases or modules, each player is free to repeat each phrase as many times as they wish before proceeding to the next. As a consequence, unpredictable layerings of the same and successive motifs occur, creating elaborate canonic textures and polyrhythms. For any number of melody instruments, the work has since been realised in versions which include solo piano, marimba ensemble and full symphony orchestra. In C defined the minimalist style of modular repetition and was the first work to bring minimalism into mainstream culture.
