(17 Aug 1998) President Bill Clinton acknowledged in a prime-time address that he had an inappropriate relationship with a young White House intern. But he refused to give detailed answers to some questions about the explicit nature of his contacts with Monica Lewinsky. In his speech Clinton said he never asked anyone to lie and said it was time to ease up on the investigation. The president said part of the reason he did not come forward earlier was to save himself and his family from embarrassment and because of his mistrust of Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr's investigation.
