Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) often develops silently and is commonly caused by conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes. However, many people are unaware that their daily habits—including the use of common medications and undergoing certain medical procedures—can slowly damage the kidneys.

𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐊𝐢𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐃𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐞:

𝟏. 𝐏𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐬

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), such as Diclofenac and Nimesulide, are widely used for pain relief but can be harmful to kidney health when taken regularly or without proper medical guidance. These medications reduce blood flow to the kidneys, which can impair their filtering function, especially in people who already have kidney-related issues or chronic conditions like hypertension and diabetes. Long-term or high-dose use should always be avoided unless prescribed by a doctor.

𝟐. 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬

Certain antibiotics, particularly those ending in “-cin” like Amikacin, Gentamicin, and Doxorubicin, are known to be nephrotoxic (toxic to the kidneys). They can damage kidney cells and reduce kidney function, especially if used repeatedly or in high doses. These drugs should only be taken under medical supervision, and patients with pre-existing kidney issues should be monitored closely during and after antibiotic use.

𝟑. 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬

Some diagnostic procedures, although helpful, can strain or damage the kidneys. For instance, the DTPA renal scan—used to assess glomerular filtration rate (GFR)—involves the use of radioactive iodine, which can be harmful if repeated frequently. It is generally advised to wait at least six months before repeating this test. Additionally, procedures like angiography, angioplasty, and ureteral stenting use contrast dyes that can cause contrast-induced nephropathy, particularly in patients with already compromised kidney function. Proper hydration and kidney-protective protocols are essential before such procedures.
