The Royal Grove Hotel is not our usual hostel experience; however, the sense of community and fun we found at the Royal Grove makes it one of the most unique hotels we’ve ever stayed at. We are not fond of the corporate sameness in the chain hotels. The Royal Grove is still a family owned business by the same family who have run it since the 1950s. The Royal Grove Hotel was the first female-owned hotel in the state of Hawaii back in the 1950s, and has been owned and operated by the Fong family since then. The rooms have kitchens and most rooms have a lanai – however, it requires attention when booking your room – there is an option for ‘lanai’ in the room descriptions. As a tip we would suggest a room that ends in “_09” – these are corner rooms with a wrap-around lanai. We stayed in #209 and absolutely loved it – also you get a cross breeze with the two patio doors open. The little kitchens are perfect for what you need to make a healthy meal and save money on restaurants. Restaurants are very expensive, especially since COVID-19. Our last trip prior to this one was in 2018 and costs have gone up by a good 30%. The Royal Grove Hotel remains affordable and best of all they do not charge a nightly amenity fee (can be well over $30 per night) that is on top of the nightly rate. The staff are friendly and helpful, and we would like to acknowledge the hard working young woman who seemed to never have a day off. I wish we had gotten your name – you were wonderful – thank you.

We highly recommend the Royal Grove Hotel for people who have a tight budget; who like unique hotel environments; and who enjoy saving a few dollars cooking in your room using the fresh, local produce. We love the 100-kilometre diet when it includes fresh pineapples, papaya, avocado and lilikoi fruits.
