When you arrive to airport, first you will need wi-fi network to check maps or search on internet. At the airport, you can use public wi-fi network for free. But as you know, public wi-fi networks are not secured, so I recommend you to use VPN services. There are many VPN services, so before your departure, choose one and have it ready. I use the Nord VPN service. It's very useful when I visit NY or so.
In Japan, there aren't enough free wi-fi network. Renting a mobile hotspot or buying a SIM cards are worth considering.
When you're heading to Tokyo from the airport , there are 3 options of transportation. 1 by bus, 2 by train, 3 by taxi. Cost and travel time are different.
When you get out from arrival gate, you can find this information board. This shows the information about access options. From top, traffic information, train information, and bus information. You can check the service status and decide which option you should choose.
When you get out from the arrival gate, you can easily find the desk for getting bus tickets. There're many bus companies, and the 2 major companies are "Airport Limousine" and "Keisei Bus". You can choose the destination from the list and get the ticket.
When you exit from the arrival gate, you might wonder which direction is the train station. Don't worry, look at the upper sign board. It shows the direction of the train station. All you need to do is follow the sign. When you ride trains from airport, you can choose from 2 company. 1 is JR line, 2 is Keisei line. The 2 railways offer different travel time and cost, and different destinations in Tokyo. And you can choose 3 options for each railway; limited express, express, and local. JR local, Limited Express, Keisei local, Skyliner, it means Express.
If you get the train tickets on the internet before departure, the price is more reasonable. However, to get train tickets on online is very complicated even for me, a Japanese. So my recommendation is the special tickets for tourists, you can get them here. The name of that ticket is "Japan Rail Pass" and "JR East Pass". The difference is "for all of Japan" or "for within Kanto area". Choose what suits your itinerary.
For heading to Tokyo from airport, taking trains and buses are reasonable, so I recommend that first. But, if you have large luggage, taking taxi is worth considering. Compared to trains and buses, taxi price is very expensive. But, if you have large sized luggage or if you are a group of 4, the cost for a taxi, and it will be worth the price.
In Japan, you need to wear a mask even now. Japan Government says, wear a mask inside, but no need if you're outside. So, you can take off your mask when outside. But, inside and even outside, some local people wear mask.
Japan Government is considering to change mask wearing rules from May 2023, but this article says, Japanese people want to continue wearing mask.
But situations are changing. Please check the latest informations.
