How to Make Generative Ambient Music in Ableton Live from Scratch

This Ableton Live tutorial dives deep into the creation of generative music from scratch. You'll learn how to leverage Ableton's MIDI effects to introduce variations in pitch, scale, tone amount, tempo, and note length—all starting from a basic MIDI clip featuring just one static note. Together with any synth, sound design is super inspiring with this device and allows you to create ethereal, spacious ambient soundscapes.

However, this video goes beyond mere demonstration of effects. Our aim is to craft a versatile instrument, one that you can save as a template and access whenever you're in the mood to create music without the need for extensive composition. In fact, it can serve as a soothing meditative practice, allowing you to sit back, listen to the music, and gently tweak parameters using your MIDI controller.

In this setup, I utilize a sampler (Simpler) as the primary sound source. Additionally, I'll demonstrate how the same principles apply when working with a synthesizer, such as Analog in Ableton. Sound Design with this device is super fun and versatile, no matter what sound source you're using.

I'm still using Ableton Live 11, but the functions and approaches I use are fully applicable to Ableton Live 12 as well. Since Ableton Live 12 introduces some new midi functions, you might even be able to further expand the techniques shown in this video.
