Presented by WGAW’s Writers Education Committee in partnership with The Hollywood Committee, an organization dedicated to changing the narrative around mental health in film and television, this Guild panel brings together leading writers and experts to explore storytelling’s critical role in addressing America’s mental health landscape. Maintaining mental health, like physical health, is a universal part of the human experience – and mental illness introduces a myriad of interesting complex narratives. This panel offers insights on how to authentically portray characters working to maintain their mental health and navigate mental illness, featuring writers and clinicians who have successfully integrated these elements into their work. We’ll examine how writers can break down stigma, navigate nuanced mental health journeys, and create narratives that resonate with diverse audiences.
