Politically, Escobar tried to legitimize his power. In the early 1980s, he was elected as an alternate member of the Colombian Congress. His entry into politics shocked the establishment, and when journalists exposed his criminal background, Escobar retaliated violently. He ordered assassinations of politicians, police officers, and anyone who stood against him. The Colombian government, pressured by the United States, began a bloody war against his cartel — but Escobar responded with even greater terror. He orchestrated bombings, kidnappings, and assassinations that claimed thousands of lives, including the 1989 bombing of Avianca Flight 203 and the murder of presidential candidate Luis Carlos Galán.
