Next at ProGuitarShop and ToneReport.com, we’re tearing into the Savage, from Anasounds. The Savage MKII is a transparent overdrive pedal that stands out by redesigning one of the most iconic drive circuits rather than cloning it. The Savage keeps the basic topology of the original golden drive circuit but reconfigures each section for a more versatile gain box. Several aspects of the drive side of the Savage can be changed in ways far beyond the original circuit, from the voice itself to the EQ options and clipping stack. The internals of the Savage offer a smorgasbord of switches and trimmers, which you set to match the rest of the rig, then control the pedal with the three main knobs on the face. The trimmer inside sets the voicing of the drive side, no longer confining you to gentle low-gain distortion. Turning the trimmer in either direction overhauls the drive circuit from extra-pacified to speaker-pushing saturation, and the Drive knob on the face of the pedal is extremely interactive with the trimmer as well. Three internal slide switches give you even more control of the circuitry. The Clipping switch changes the arrangement from the classic germanium diodes to silicon, giving a more open crunch. Those looking to use the Savage for their rhythm tone will enjoy the OD-Bass switch, which significantly ratchets up the low-end content. The Treble switch turns the classic Treble control into a more traditional tone control to precision match the Savage to your axe. And just like all Anasounds pedals, the Savage MKII is made by hand in France.
