This video is all about figuring out the BPM of an instrumental, drum loop, or any audio file in Ableton Live. With some practice, this is done by ear or visually. The key is understanding the relationship of time and tempo, and how that is affected by warping. As a producer or audio engineer, understanding how the timeline and warping works is a huge step toward understanding any DAW. And how music/audio can be manipulated.

The often overlooked step is to find an obvious downbeat in your instrumental. Usually where the drums come in. In Pro Tools you use Tab To Transient, but Ableton does not have that feature so we do it manually. Then, I usually tap in a tempo or guess a ballpark tempo range. Hip Hop and electronic beats will usually loop around every four bars, so we are looking for those drum hits to line up with the grid.

If you think this is a stupid idea and would rather just use Mixed In Key, Rekordbox, other DJ software, or just look up the BPM, bear with me! Once you get some practice doing this with simple music, you can start doing much more complex warping tasks. Getting good at beat matching, finding BPMs, warping audio, and time correcting will 100% develop your ears to become a better producer and to hear nuances in groove and timing in music.
