The bassline is straight forward but also with lots of variations in the second bar of the maingroove. The maingroove is in the rhythm almost the same. For instance in the first 16 bars. But there are lots of variations in the notes of the second bar of the groove. For instance bar 34, 38, 59, 66 68 etc. etc. On the solo Walter plays beautiful licks like in bars 94- 96 and in bar 100 On the organsolo heplays more sixteenth notes like in bars 116. And in the outro Walter improvises and gives of beautiful riffs like in bars 162 and 163.

Please mention that I use the hammer on technique a lot in the (main)groove. In the ‘zero’ bar I’ve written the ‘bend lines’. I play the C and let my pinky of my left hand go down on the D note. I do the same with the F and G note. I’ve written ‘similar’ at this bar, which means that I use this technique all the time in the maingroove and also on other parts of the bassline to make the line more ‘smooth’.

I play this song on a Fender Jazzbass with roundwound strings.

Bassplayer: Walter Becker
Album: Can’t buy a thrill (1972)
