Roughly 13% of American adults live alone, and the share of solo households has been increasing for decades:

1940: 8% of households were made up of solo individuals

1970: 18% of households were made up of solo individuals

2022: Estimated 29% of households were made up of solo individuals 

The percentage of people living alone varies by age: 

18-24: 4% of adults live alone 

25-34: 9% of adults live alone 

35-44: 8% of adults live alone 

45-54: 12% of adults live alone 

55-64: 17% of adults live alone 

65 or older: Nearly 3 in 10 adults live alone 

Other statistics about loneliness in the United States include:

Generation Z (ages 18-22) is the loneliest generation, with 79% reporting feelings of loneliness

The increase in people living alone is a global trend, and some scholars say it's a transformation rather than a trend. 

The number of people living alone varies by age:

Women ages 65 to 74: 27% live alone

Men ages 65 to 74: 21% live alone

Women over age 75: 43% live alone

Men over age 75: 24% live alone
