Blues licks are one of the best ways a guitarist can develop phrasing. What I’m about to show you is a sound you’ll hear played by guitarists like; Robin Ford, John Scofield, Scott Henderson and many others. It takes the common “Blues” scale and applies notes around it from an arpeggio called, “Minor 7(b5).”

This lesson will demonstrate how the notes of Minor 7(b5) arpeggio can be performed within blues harmony in two ways. We will explore how to play this arpeggio from the “Major 3rd” of a Dominant 7 chord, along with how it can be performed from off of the “b5” tone of the prescribed Blues Scale.

We will test both of these methods by using the “I7-IV7-V7” chords that are found in an “A” Blues progression. Each chord “A7, D7 and E7,” will have an example lick that highlights the application of this arpeggio.

Typically, guitar players would stick with the “A” Blues scale to play licks and lines across all of the chords in a Blues progression. However, there are new sounds and chord color options that can be obtained through the use of the “Minor 7(b5)” arpeggio. We will explore two of those methods in this lesson.

The “Minor 7(b5)” arpeggio contains a Root, b3, b5, b7. When this arpeggio is performed from a Dominant 7th chords “Major 3rd” we obtain the effect of a “Dominant 9” harmony. If the “Minor 7(b5)” is performed off of the Blues Scale’s “b5” tone during the “IV-chord” we enhance the harmonic pull to the “I-chord.”
