(23 Mar 2014) The head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Sunday emphasised China's need to be a global responsible partner, and praised Beijing's search for more sustainable growth as outlined by the government at the end of 2013.
"With its size, its ranking in the economy, clearly China's share of global responsibility has increased as well, in supporting global common good, global financial stability, environmental stability and improving the global rules of the game," IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde told business and government leaders gathered in Beijing for a business and development forum.
Lagarde told delegates at the China Development Forum that the IMF welcomes "strengthened partnership" with China.
She said economic reforms launched after the Third Plenum of the Communist Party in November last year should benefit the entire world.
"I certainly hope, Mr. Vice Premier, that the Chinese dream will be big enough to include as many of us as possible," she told Politburo Standing Committee member and Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli, who chaired the opening of the forum.
Speaking as a representative of the foreign business community, Caterpillar chairman Douglas Oberhelman praised the country's leaders pledges to reform and further open up the economy, but said that more needs to be done to help innovation in the economy.
Zhang repeated previous promises of deepening the adjustment of the economic model, but referred to the modernisation in agriculture, industry, national defence and science and technology as the key dimensions.
These goals, known as "the four modernisations" in China's communist jargon, were already outlined by former Premier Zhou Enlai and carried out after 1978, during the first round of opening and reform by former leader and communist patriarch Deng Xiaoping.
The China Development Forum was founded in 2000 in Beijing as a platform for top decision makers in business, academy and government.
