A strange and colorful love story that takes place in 1977, Israel. Robert, a charming and charismatic man, is married to Rama, a docile woman. Their relationship is cold and unstable. Robert is desperately in love with Rama's younger sister Mary, but she is married to Ali, an Arab from the neighboring village, and their relationship is filled with love and emotion.
Mary's family, especially her elder sister Rama, has cast her away, but Ali's great love for her doesn't console her. When Mary is diagnosed with a terminal disease and finds out she has a few days to live, all she wants is to be buried as a Jew. She sends messages to her sister and to the head of the religious council, but to no avail. Her loving husband must bury her outside the cemetery gates. Mary's death weighs heavy on Rama. She is filled with guilt, despair about her own marriage and deeply misses her sister. For the first time in her life, she independently decides to fulfill Mary's wish to be buried as a Jew. Meanwhile, Robert becomes unstable – Mary appears in his hallucinations and his sanity is deteriorating. He is fired from his job and becomes the town laughing-stock. Rama gathers her 17-year-old son Roi, who is friendly with the daughter of the head of the religious council, the rabbi, the town's women and Robert's dubious friends. As though a sign from heaven, Rama decides to paint their homes. Robert slowly comes out of his hallucinations and joins Ali in fulfilling Mary's wish. They transfer her body into a Jewish grave, Robert returns to his newly painted home and turns over a new leaf with Rama and their son Roi.
