Nightwis's song, "Shoemaker", is a tribute to Eugene Merle Shoemaker (1928–1997), an American geologist and planetary scientist widely regarded as the founder of planetary science. He co-discovered the Comet Shoemaker–Levy 9 (which famously impacted Jupiter in 1994) and always dreamed of becoming an astronaut to visit the Moon. Tragically, a medical condition prevented him from going to space during his lifetime.
After his death in a car accident, NASA honored his lifelong wish: in 1998, some of his ashes were placed aboard the Lunar Prospector spacecraft, which crashed into the Moon's south pole. Eugene Shoemaker remains the only human whose remains are buried on the Moon. His urn bears the inscription "Ad astra" ("To the stars") and a quote from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet:
"And, when he shall d!e, / Take him and cut him out in little stars, / And he will make the face of heaven so fine / That all the world will be in love with night / And pay no worship to the garish sun."
Nightwish's main songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen was deeply moved by Shoemaker's biography—he has said reading it brought the entire band to tears—and felt compelled to tell this "incredible and poetic" story through music. The song captures humanity's outward urge to explore the cosmos, the beauty of the universe, and finding peace in eternal wonder.
