In this video, I address the growing controversy surrounding YB Akmal Saleh’s recent actions, from the “type C” Jalur Gemilang incident to the wider pattern of political behavior that increasingly resembles bullying rather than leadership. What began as a call for national pride has, in my view, crossed a line—turning isolated mistakes into mass outrage campaigns, encouraging thousands to pile on, and fostering a culture of intimidation under the banner of patriotism. This isn’t just about correcting a flag error; it’s about how a political figure’s tone and actions can normalize aggression in public discourse and teach Malaysians that coercion is an acceptable way to enforce values.

The conversation becomes even more troubling when viewed alongside the tragic case of Zara, whose story has been invoked in the midst of these controversies. Zara’s memory deserves better than to be tied to political grandstanding, particularly when the same tactics that led to her suffering are echoed in the public shaming campaigns we see today. When politicians use emotionally charged symbols and vulnerable figures to stir anger, it blurs the line between advocacy and exploitation. The double standard is striking—swift condemnation when opponents err, but silence or inaction when allies commit the same mistakes. This selective outrage not only undermines credibility, it erodes trust in the sincerity of nationalist claims.

From the KK Mart socks incident to the absence of similar criticism toward UMNO Terengganu’s own flag blunder, the pattern is consistent: a willingness to weaponize controversies for political capital, even at the cost of deepening divisions in Malaysian society. My argument here is not that national pride is wrong, but that the way it is pursued matters deeply. Leadership should inspire respect through fairness, integrity, and education—not fear, hypocrisy, or the constant manufacturing of enemies. If we truly want a Malaysia that stands united and commands respect on the world stage, we must move away from performative outrage and toward constructive dialogue. Anything less risks creating a country where bullying is not just tolerated but celebrated, with consequences that reach far beyond politics.
