This World Tribal Day Song is a heartfelt, tribute dedicated to the strength, dignity, wisdom and cultural sovereignty of tribals / indigenous communities across the world.
Before cities, before borders, before modern civilization, tribal societies existed as guardians of the Earth. Their way of life taught humanity the meaning of co-existence, sustainability, restraint, and respect for nature.
For indigenous communities, the forest is not a resource, but a relative. The river is not a commodity, but a living spirit. The land is not property, but Mother Earth.
Tribal life itself is a message:
Why 9th August Matters | 9
Every year on 9th August, the world observes the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, also known as World Tribal Day.
Declared by the United Nations in 1994, this day aims to:
Raise global awareness about indigenous peoples
Protect indigenous rights, cultures, languages, and identities
Recognize their contributions to humanity and environmental conservation
UN Message & Global Commitment |
The United Nations recognizes that indigenous peoples are among the most culturally rich yet historically marginalized communities in the world.
Their survival is deeply tied to:
Land, Natural resources, Collective identity, Traditional governance, and Cultural autonomy
World Tribal Day is not meant to be symbolic. It is meant to be transformative.

UN Definition of Indigenous Peoples |
The United Nations does not enforce a rigid definition of “Indigenous Peoples”.
Instead, it follows a self-identification approach, emphasizing historical continuity and cultural distinctiveness.
According to the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations:
“Indigenous Communities, Peoples and Nations are those which, having a historical continuity with pre-invasion and pre-colonial societies, consider themselves distinct from other sectors of society.”
Key Characteristics:
Historical continuity with pre-colonial societies
Strong link to ancestral territories
Distinct language, culture & belief systems
Non-dominant status
Self-identification
Government Position:
Almost all Indians are indigenous to the land
Hence, no single group is labeled “Indigenous”
Constitution uses the term Scheduled Tribes (STs)
The Debate & Pain |
Critics argue that non-recognition under UNDRIP weakens:-
Land rights, Cultural Autonomy, Self-governance, International Advocacy.
One of the greatest deprivations faced by Indian tribals is the denial of Tribal Identity.
They are often treated as:
Welfare beneficiaries
Socio-economic categories
Administrative labels
Rather than as:
Distinct civilizations
Political & cultural identities
Indigenous nationals with inherent rights
This leads to:
Displacement, Loss of languages
Erosion of customary laws
Exclusion from decision-making
Final Message |
World Tribal Day reminds us that:
Protecting tribal culture is protecting humanity
Development without dignity is injustice
Sustainability begins with indigenous wisdom
