Modern medicine is pretty great. Sure we can’t cure diseases like cancer and lupus (yet), but we’ve got the smaller stuff pretty much down. Of course, it wasn’t always like that. A couple hundred years ago, you’d have been lucky to survive a deep cut, let alone an auto-immune disease! So, in the interest of helping you appreciate medicine as we know it, we’re going to take you on a tour of medicine throughout the Middle Ages!
In doing so you’ll discover what the general medical consensus was at the time, how physicians would diagnose patients (hint: it involves tasting pee), and what kind of treatments they would prescribe! We’ll take a look at what doctors in the middle ages got right, what they got wrong, and most importantly, whether you would have survived a trip to see your local surgeon/barber if you’d been around! (Yeah that’s right, at one point those professions overlapped quite significantly). If any of that piques your interest, click the video above to hop into Brainiard’s brand new time machine!
