Dec 23 (Reuters) – The United States and Iran clashed at the United Nations Security Council over the conditions for resuming nuclear negotiations. The U.S. stated that it remains ready for direct and meaningful talks with Iran but insisted that Tehran must abandon uranium enrichment, a key sticking point in past negotiations. Morgan Ortagus, Deputy U.S. Middle East Envoy, emphasized that eliminating enrichment in Iran is a non-negotiable principle, citing concerns over potential weaponization.
Iran, however, rejected Washington’s demand, arguing that insisting on a zero-enrichment policy violates its rights under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). Iran’s UN Ambassador, Amir Saeid Iravani, stressed that such conditions undermine the possibility of fair and meaningful negotiations and asserted that Iran’s nuclear activities are for peaceful purposes and fully compliant with the NPT.
The confrontation comes after five rounds of nuclear talks that were interrupted by a 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel in June, during which the U.S. targeted Iranian nuclear sites. Uranium enrichment remains the major hurdle in reviving negotiations, with the U.S. seeking strict limitations while Iran insists on retaining its sovereign rights. The deadlock highlights continuing mistrust and the challenges facing efforts to restart the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
