In Episode 6 of our journey with John Lobb, I return to 9 St James’s Street for one of the most exciting milestones in the bespoke shoemaking process—the first fitting.

The shoes, while not yet finished, have been fully assembled and are now ready to be tried on. This fitting allows the shoemaker and lastmaker to assess the fit, evaluate the balance, and make any final refinements before they are sent for custom shoe trees and final polishing.

At John Lobb, fittings are still conducted exactly as they always have been: using fully assembled shoes. In keeping with Lobb’s unwavering commitment to practicing their craft at the absolute highest level, this approach offers the only true and complete representation of a proper pair of bespoke shoes.

It’s during this step that the skill of bespoke really shines—where even the smallest adjustments are considered, from pressure points on the toe box to the pitch of the heel and symmetry of the facings. Every nuance is taken into account to ensure not only a perfect fit, but also the comfort and elegance that define a truly bespoke pair of shoes.
