Establishing a well defined document classification model for any DMS system in the beginning of the design phase is critical for the success of a DMS. Document classification will directly impact both the browsability and searchability of a system. Identifying securable classification will greatly impact the design of authorization module. A business document taxonomy will help you defined a much better metadata and search term models as well.

Remember, your tagging systems and classifications have to be synched to the metadata systems as well as search keywords. It would be difficult to change the underlying models if you try to change it at a later point.
