Hello! Anthony the WordPress Guy here with another WordPress Quick Tip.

Today, I’m going to be talking about caching your WordPress site. So caching is crucial to improving your site’s overall speed. The basic purpose of caching is to create an HTML version of your pages that can be served more quickly than the PHP pages that are normally served.

If you’re unfamiliar, WordPress runs off of PHP, and PHP sites are made up of hundreds of files that communicate with one another to generate data on your page. This can be very hard on your servers, and all those processes come together to create one static HTML page, so why not save that and display it quicker?

So, that’s what the caching plugin is doing. It’s saving the HTML data, and it’s serving it to your visitors quicker. The plugin I’m going to be talking about is called WP-Supercache. So, let’s get to it.

As always, we’re going to start in the Plugins section, and we’re going to click on the Add New button and search for super cache (just one word). Go ahead and search for that. The first result is the one we want. Click Install Now on WP-Supercache. Once it is installed, you’re going to want to activate the plugin. After it activates, you’re going to see a message at the top that says, “WP-Supercache is disabled. Please go to the plugin admin page to enable caching.”

So, let’s do that. Click on the link for the Plugin Admin Page, and once you get here, you’re going to see a message that says WP_CACHE constant added to wp-config.php - that’s fine. You can ignore that message, as it’ll go away once you refresh the page.

In order to enable caching, click on the Caching On radio button, then click on the Update Status button. What happens when you enable caching is it’s going to enable PHP caching which is dynamically generated cache, and it’s going to enable cache rebuild and the mobile support. We’ll get into those in the Advanced setting.

Just so that you can see the performance difference between the two, this is a test that I ran on my site before installing Supercache, and that’s a 2.6 second load time, which is not great - it can be much better. But after installing Supercache, it went down to 675 milliseconds, so .6 seconds, which is a great increase.

So, let’s look into those advanced settings and see what we can do with this plugin. Click on the Advanced tab, and once you get there, you’re going to see a ton of options, and I’ll explain the ones that are important. At the top here, it says, “Cache hits to this website for quick access.” You’re going to leave that on - its recommended.

Now on this section here, it says, “Use mod_rewrite to serve cache files (Recommended).” If you are creating a page that has content that is not dynamically generated, like if you have posts that are constantly changing or advertisements that are rotating, you will not want to select that section - you’re going to want to leave it at “Use PHP to serve cache files” because what this does is it keeps everything dynamic. If you use the mod_rewrite, it’s going to generate an HTML page and anytime people go to your website, its going to redirect them to that HTML page. If you have ads that are rotating or content that’s changing constantly, that content is not going to be current and it’s not going to be rotating, so PHP cache keeps it dynamic.

Now, let’s look down here. “Compress pages so that they’re served more quickly to visitors (Recommended).” Go ahead and enable that - it’s going to compress the HTML pages. Now, let’s scroll down here to “Don’t cache pages with GET parameters.” If you have something in your site that has maybe an input to where somebody enters, say, a zip code and from there it takes them to a page that has a Google Map that shows all of the restaurants that are in that zip code. You don’t want that to be cached because it’s going to be different for everyone. So those GET parameters are going to take away any Javascript that you’re passing across pages, so it’s not going to cache those. I highly recommend enabling that.
