This painting entitled Daniel's Answer to the King by the British artist Briton Rivière is a Victorian masterpiece and was painted in 1890. Painted in oil on canvas, it is on display at the Manchester City Art Gallery in Manchester.
Rivière depicts a story from the Old Testament in this painting: the man on the left-hand side is the Jewish official Daniel in the service of the Persian king Darius. The Persian king had it forbidden by law to pray to anyone other than himself. Daniel, however, did not want to betray his faith and continued to pray toward Jerusalem. For that, Darius had him imprisoned and thrown to the lions. Miraculously, Daniel was still alive the next day and unharmed by the beasts as God protected him.
Rivière decided to capture this very moment: Daniel is turning his back on the lions while he is gazing heavenwards through a window in the thick walls of his prison cell. He is dressed in a velvet robe with golden embroidery, emphasizing his important status as a Jewish official. His hands have been tied to his back, and at his feed, one can see the blank bones of perhaps previous prisoners. At first glance, Daniel seems to be at the mercy of the pack of lions ultimately. But a gentle light that is falling on him through the window, symbolizing his God, is protecting him. This light brightly illuminates the pack of lions that has gathered behind him in a semi-circle. None of the mighty creatures dares to cross the circle of light to get to Daniel.
Rivière was one of the most eminent animal painters of his time, which he masterfully displays in the depiction of the lions in his painting. Every single one of them is shown in an individual movement and from a different view. Also, the artist imbued them with almost human qualities: each of them has a unique reaction to the scene, their faces expressing fear or confusion. From a young age, Rivière went to the London Zoological Garden to draw animals from life. He was also a frequent visitor to dissections held there. This combination of drawing wildlife from life and his knowledge about the anatomical make-up of the lion's body makes the lions in this painting so compelling.
