Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) is a practice that helps organizations optimize the efficiency and reliability of IT pipelines. Much like DevOps, SRE accomplishes this with a focus on collaboration, communication, and replacing any slow or wasteful processes using automation.
SRE refers to this process as reducing ‘toil’. When work is manual, repetitive, automatable, and has no long-term value, it is classed as ‘toil’. Such processes also tend to scale linearly, increasing the amount of work required as a service continues to scale up. When a site reliability engineer recognizes an instance of toil, they will work to replace the offending process. SRE teams will aim to keep the work caused by toil from creating more than 50% of their total workload, though most will continue reoptimizing and automating processes until this figure is closer to 30%.

In this video from our Site Reliability Engineering Foundation (SREF) course, we take a look at what constitutes ‘toil’, as well as how site reliability engineers can tackle it. Good e-Learning is an award-winning online training provider, as well as a Trusted Education Partner for the organization behind the SREF syllabus, the DevOps Institute. We build our courses with help from highly experienced subject matter experts, helping us deliver training that not only prepares students to pass their certification exams, but also demonstrates how to apply their new knowledge in practice.

Each course comes with a variety of online training assets, including instructor-led videos, knowledge checks, practice exams, and downloadable materials for offline study. Students can access courses via the free Go.Learn app, and our support team is fully qualified to answer questions on course content.
