Cataract surgery is our most powerful refractive procedure and it can correct extreme degrees of hyperopia and myopia, and it can address astigmatism and presbyopia too. If you perform cataract surgery, you are performing refractive surgery. Think of refractive surgery as a spectrum of procedures which span everything from corneal refractive surgery (LASIK, PRK, SMILE, inlays) to lens surgery (phakic IOLs, RLE, cataract surgery). While at the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting in New Orleans, I was fortunate to cross paths with Guy Kezirian, MD, MBA who is a strong proponent of refractive surgery. He is a founder of the Refractive Surgery Alliance and even hosts educational refractive surgery webinars for doctors in training.

Well past midnight and at the point of exhaustion, I stopped Dr Kezirian for a quick interview recorded in the lobby of his hotel on my mobile phone. The advice is sage and really hammers home the point that refractive surgery is truly a super-specialty (not a sub-specialty) of ophthalmology.
