In loving memory of Robert Redford — a legendary storyteller who inspired generations.

This retro layered pudding dessert goes by many names, but in A Century of Mormon Cookery it’s called “Better Than Robert Redford” Squares — a creamy, nostalgic treat from the era when dessert names were as dramatic as the movies.

In the 1970s, a popular chocolate dessert circulated nationally under the cheeky name “Better Than Sex” cake. True to form, the Mormon cooks who compiled this cookbook weren’t about to print that on their recipe cards — but they were more than happy to swap in Robert Redford’s name for the same wink-wink effect. He was our local celebrity here in Utah: dazzlingly handsome, famously talented, and just a little bit dangerous… because he wasn’t a Mormon.

I combined two recipes from the book — Pistachio Dessert (page 284) for its flaky pecan crust and Better Than Robert Redford Squares (page 345) for its rich, silky filling — and scaled it down to a 9x9 pan so two people don’t accidentally eat a whole 9x13 in one sitting.

Better than Robert Redford Squares
Crust
• 1 cup flour
• ½ cup butter
• ½ cup crushed pecans
• pinch of salt
Mix and press into a 9x9 pan. Bake at 350°F for 30 minutes. Cool.

Filling
• 6 oz cream cheese
• 1 cup powdered sugar
• 1 container whipped topping
• 1 small pkg instant vanilla pudding mix
• 1 small pkg instant chocolate pudding mix
• 2¼ cups cold milk
• grated chocolate for garnish
Beat cream cheese, powdered sugar, and half the whipped topping. Spread on cooled crust.
Mix puddings with milk, spread on cream cheese layer.
Top with remaining whipped topping and grated chocolate. Chill before serving.
